Dieting is a lot like dating.
Let me explain.
Recently, I was reminded of how similar dieting and dating really are. For example, in dating, the process often begins with surface-level evaluations, like evaluating your partner to make sure you’re a good fit.
The same is true for dieting. At first, you’re just trying to figure out the basics like, “What workouts or foods would give me the best results and align with my lifestyle? How do I stay consistent?”. It’s all about the logistics, making sure things “fit” on a surface level.
But as time goes on, the stakes get higher. You start asking deeper questions like:
Is this aligned with my values?
Does this fit into my life in a way that feels sustainable?
Am I happy with the direction this is taking me?
Have you ever been in a situation where you felt you had to become someone you’re not just to make things work? I have. And I can tell you—it’s not a recipe for long-term success.
The same goes for dieting. If you’re trying to force yourself into a system or process that doesn’t honor your lifestyle, preferences, or long-term goals, it’s bound to fall apart eventually.
When things don’t work out, the best thing you can do is take a step back and reflect. Ask yourself:
What did I learn from this experience?
What are my non-negotiables moving forward?
How can I make choices that align with what truly matters to me?
For example, I thought carbs made me fat, so I went keto and cut out all carbs. Long story short— that didn’t work for me. I’m French. I can’t give up bread. Who wants to live a live without a fresh crispy baguette and croissants??? But I digress 😆
It wasn’t until I took the time to reflect on my own failures that I realized I needed to build something tailored to my unique preferences and lifestyle that included the occasional croissant.
And that’s the secret: sustainable fat loss isn’t about following someone else’s rules. It’s about creating something that works for YOU.
It’s like finding the right partner. What’s right for someone else won’t necessarily be right for you—and that’s okay!
So, here’s what I want you to consider:
What truly matters to you in dieting?
Are you making decisions that align with your values?
Is this sustainable for you in the long term?
Remember, sustainable fat loss is a journey, not a destination. It evolves with you as you grow.
Stop comparing your path to someone else’s. Instead, lean into what makes sense for YOU and let go of the pressure to conform to anyone else’s rules.
