Can eating 1000 calories or less a day make you fat?
The answer might surprise you…
Yes, eating 1000 calories a day or less can make you fat ๐ฎ.
You might be thinking ๐ค, “Emma that’s impossible because we’d be in a calorie deficit.”
That is correct you would be in a calorie deficit.
And being in a calorie deficit means you are losing weight, but where is that weight coming from?
When you are eating 1000 calories or less a day, it makes it very difficult to hit your protein intake and train effectively.
Both are super important for muscle building and muscle preservation ๐ช๐ป
So if you are eating 1000 kcal or less a day, your body is going to try to slow down your metabolism and do what it does best -> adapt.
It will remove the most metabolically active tissue (i.e. the tissue that requires the most amount of calories to maintain).
And yep. You guessed it. The most metabolically active tissue is muscle.
If you are eating 1000 kcal a day or less daily, your body will be trying to pair down muscle. So you’ll be losing muscle mass not body fat.
If you are losing weight but most of that weight is muscle, you body fat percentage will increase.
If your body fat percentage increased, you got fatter.
So yes, you can lose weight on a super low calorie diet, but doing so will set you up for failure long term.
Your metabolism will be worse off that it was before, you’ll be weaker and more prone to chronic disease, and it will be SUPER difficult to maintain that weight loss.
This is exactly why I NEVER promote extreme low calorie diets, detoxes, juice cleanses, or fasting.
Instead I use a sustainable approach with my clients, so they can lose the weight and keep it off for LIFE.
